Ulysses S. Grant IV was an American geologist and paleontologist who made significant contributions to the study of fossil mollusks off the California Pacific Coast.
Ulysses Simpson Grant IV was born on May 23, 1893, in New York but moved to San Diego, California with his family when he was still a baby.
He was the youngest son of Ulysses S. Grant Jr., and a grandson of President Ulysses S. Grant and Senator Jerome B. Chaffee.
Grant studied geology at Harvard University, where he graduated in 1915. After his graduation, Grant joined and served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
After the conclusion of the war, he worked as a stockbroker for a few years before he decided to pursue his PhD in paleontology from Stanford University in 1929.
Grant spent most of his career as a curator of paleontology at the National History Museum of Los Angeles County and as a professor of paleontology at the University of California.
Ulysses S. Grant IV also served as the chairman of the geology department at UCLA for several years.
Grant married twice. Grant’s first wife was Matilda Bartikofsky, whom he married in 1917 and later divorced. In 1950, he later married Frances Dean and they had a son together.
Ulysses S. Grant IV sadly passed away in 1977 from lung failure caused by leukemia.
