Early Life and Fascination with Mechanics

Walter Chrysler was a prominent figure in the automotive industry and the founder of Chrysler Corporation. He was born on April 2, 1875, in Wamego, Kansas, to a family of farmers. From a young age, Chrysler was fascinated by machines and mechanics, and he developed a talent for repairing machinery.

Start of a Career in Mechanics

In 1901, Chrysler began working as a machinist’s apprentice at the Union Pacific Railroad’s machine shop in Ellis, Kansas. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a foreman, overseeing a team of mechanics. In 1908, he moved to Pittsburgh to work for the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) as a superintendent of its Pittsburgh Works.

Leadership at Buick

In 1911, Walter Chrysler was hired by Buick, which was owned by William C. Durant, to manage its production line. Chrysler was a natural leader and quickly made improvements to the production process, which increased efficiency and reduced costs. He also oversaw the development of the first Buick engine with overhead valves.

President of Buick and Departure

In 1916, Chrysler was appointed president of Buick. However, he clashed with Durant over the direction of the company, and in 1919, he resigned from Buick and joined the struggling Willys-Overland Motor Company in Toledo, Ohio.

Innovations at Willys-Overland

At Willys-Overland, Walter Chrysler introduced a number of innovations, including the first four-wheel hydraulic brakes, which became a standard feature on all cars. He also introduced a new engine, the “Whippet Six”, which was more powerful and fuel-efficient than the competition.

Turning Around Maxwell Motor Company

In 1920, Chrysler was hired by the Maxwell Motor Company, which was in financial trouble. He quickly turned the company around and launched a new car, the Chrysler Six, which was a hit with consumers. The Chrysler Six was innovative in many ways, featuring a number of new technologies, including a high-compression engine, full-pressure lubrication, and a one-piece cylinder head.

Founding of Chrysler Corporation

In 1925, Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation, which quickly became one of the “Big Three” American automobile manufacturers, along with Ford and General Motors. Chrysler was known for his attention to detail and his ability to develop innovative new products. Under his leadership, the company launched a number of successful models, including the Plymouth, Dodge, and DeSoto.

Challenges During the Great Depression

During the Great Depression, Chrysler implemented a number of cost-cutting measures to keep the company afloat, including reducing executive salaries and closing plants. He also introduced a new low-priced car, the Airflow, which was aerodynamically designed and ahead of its time, but ultimately failed to catch on with consumers.

Retirement and Later Years

In 1940, Chrysler retired as chairman of the company but remained on the board of directors. He was succeeded by his son, who oversaw the company’s expansion into defense production during World War II. Chrysler died on August 18, 1940, at the age of 65.
